Microfabrication for R&D, Prototyping & Validation

You bring the design. We deliver precise short-run processing and micro-scale validation to help you prove, refine, and de-risk it.

R&D focused · Prototype quantities · Fast iteration

Best for: feasibility, prototypes, DOE/parameter sweeps, design refinement, proof/characterization, pre-manufacturing risk reduction.

Not a fit: volume/contract manufacturing, turnkey device assembly, regulated production environments, high-throughput “at-scale” output.

Note: We can help you with manufacturing partners when you’re ready.

Fabrication (Lamination & Micro-assembly)

What you get: Layered/assembled structures and device stacks.
Good for: Thin-sheet and structure lamination; simple micro-assembly.
Typical outputs: Built parts + brief assembly notes; optional metrology bundle.
Inputs we need: Stack drawing, materials, target thicknesses.
Lead time: Project-dependent (R&D runs only).
Billing unit: Tool + labor + materials (T&M).

Metrology (Scanning Laser Microscope, High-Speed Camera, Inspection)

What you get: Measurement and imaging services.
Good for: Profiles, surface roughness, motion analysis, anomaly characterization.
Typical outputs: Images/video, profiles, concise summary table.
Inputs we need: Sample IDs, what to measure, pass/fail or tolerance.
Lead time: Usually short; batching possible.
Billing unit: Tool + labor (materials only if fixtures).

Validation (Testing & Documentation)

What you get: Functional/performance tests plus a concise report.
Good for: Device and part-level characterization; DOE sweeps.
Typical outputs: Data collection → analysis → brief findings report.
Inputs we need: Test plan, metrics of interest, acceptance criteria.
Lead time: Depends on test complexity.
Billing unit: Labor + (tool time if applicable).

Add-Ons (Demo Units & IP Support)

What you get: Demo builds for show-and-tell; invention/IP prep & support.
Good for: De-risking internal buy-in; patent-ready documentation.
Typical outputs: Demo unit; invention identification → info prep → app/prosecution support.
Inputs we need: Intended use, constraints, IP goals.
Lead time: Short for demos; variable for IP.
Billing unit: Labor (+ materials for demos).

New: Laser Process Development Sprint—design, run DOE, and deliver a validated recipe + metrology bundle.

Service Details (R&D-scale)

Our Service Process

We accept common CAD/vector formats (DXF/SVG/STEP/AI). Include material & thickness, critical dims/tolerances, quantities (prototype/small batch), and any metrology or video needs.

Need more than a run? Custom Device Development (R2RMEMS)

End-to-end R&D programs for custom R2R-fabricated micro-devices. We co-design, build, measure, and iterate to reach spec—then help you prepare for transfer to manufacturing.

Pricing Model (Time & Materials for R&D)

How we bill: R&D runs are billed on a Time & Materials basis so you only pay for the tool time, engineering effort, and materials actually used. We scope each run, share an estimate range, and update you if anything changes before proceeding.

Cost Components

Tool time

  • IR / UV laser systems
  • Scanning laser microscope
  • High-speed camera
  • Inspection microscope
  • Laminator & general lab tools

Covers setup, processing, in-run checks, and standard verifications.

Labor

    • Design review & toolpath prep
    • DOE planning & supervision
    • Adjustments & troubleshooting
    • Measurement, analysis, documentation
    • Project communication

Staffed by designers, scientists, and engineers as the work requires.

Materials

  • Client-supplied (preferred)
  • Procurement on request (pre-approved)
  • Consumables & films/adhesives
  • Specialty stock or samples

Lead times vary; we’ll coordinate to keep the queue moving.

What’s typically included

  • Process log (key parameters, date/time, run IDs) and basic inspection images for traceability.
  • Part/coupon set from the final/pass runs (labeled to match the log).
  • Brief summary note of results and next steps.

Add-ons (when requested)

  • Metrology bundle: profiles, roughness, high-speed video, measurement tables.
  • Laser Process Development Sprint: structured DOE to create/optimize a recipe.
  • Documentation pack: short report, figures, and acceptance vs targets.
  • Custom fixtures / NRE: when standard fixturing won’t meet the spec.

Policies that keep things predictable

  • Minimums: R&D engagements have booking minimums for continuity; we’ll state these up front.
  • Pre-approval gates: you’ll see estimates, any fixture/material NRE, and not-to-exceed caps before we proceed.
  • Change control: if inputs or targets change, we’ll pause, revise the scope, and seek approval.
  • Materials handling: we can work with client-supplied material or procure upon approval; lead times may affect scheduling.
  • Shipping & taxes: pass-through as applicable; return shipping arranged per your instructions.
  • Scope: R&D only (not volume manufacturing). Transfer-readiness is available as a separate deliverable.

Why RollTech MicroSystems?

  • Dual-laser (IR + UV) flexibiliby under one roof
  • Microscope-mounted high-speed imaging for micro-scale motion proof
  • Fast “cycles of leaning” to optimize designs
